Cellular Sub-Culture

I had first written this post about a month ago and when I had almost finished it, I decided to give it a quick read. After which I found myself thinking that this stuff isn’t relevant anymore and it all sounds like nonsense as a result of which, I didn’t post it.
(That, and the fact that my comp switched off before I could save or publish it!!)

Anyways, a recent experience at a friend’s place totally affirmed my theory, so much so, that throughout the evening I had this self praising grin on my face. I even brought it up a couple of times. (I guess it was just a full on pat-my-own-back fest!) With renewed faith in my views I’m now putting it down.

On more than a few occasions, I’ve noticed a whole new social behavioral pattern that I like to call the cellular sub-culture.

I’m sure we’ve all noticed it or done it, you walk into this place, meet up with your friends, new and old, say hey and blam – “hey is that the new N blah blah blah? Whats the internal memory? How many Mega Pixels? Edge? Gprs? Air-bag? Anti-rape alarm? DVD player? Solution to end world suffering??!!!” Yes, the cellphone of today has everything and more but that’s not the problem. The fact that we all talk about the phones from time to time also isn’t that bad. It’s when it replaces all other topics of conversation and ends up sounding like elvish, that you know isn’t commonplace behavior. Whatever happened to "so whats your favourite colour?" rather than "the N XXXX comes in a variety of colours." If, you know what i mean?

I consider myself the average tech loving guy but even for me, phone talks get outta hand. I actually have friends who can talk entirely in numbers and know exactly what they mean. Stuff like “have you seen the 1232? It got a higher processor than the 6738 or the 63532. I love the i373o’s looks, it’s been based on the 3435!!!” I just stand by like “is the 3435 the one with the squiggly lines on the back?”

I think back to a simpler time (not too long ago) when you went from one place to another and weren’t paranoid that people can’t reach you, and wonder how it’ll ever be the same. It won’t. Infact, there’s gonna be more of it, all around us. But living with technology and spending all your spare time talking bout it are two different things of which the latter one, atleast, I hope I can avoid....for now.

Meanwhile, I’m gonna go check my phone cos it hasn’t made a sound in 15 whole minutes and my hands are beginning to tremble. I am hopelessly addicted.

What struck me is how u said that there was a time that we went somewhere without the cellphone and weren't paranoid about how people won't be able to reach u! God, that time seems so long back! Can't believe we could actually survive pretty well without the constant barrage of phones/sms...

Btw, for our generation, the name should be sms-generation.. gone are the days for long talks on the phone.. now its replaced by the less obstrusive, cheaper (sometimes) sms.. hmmm..

My phone is an ancient, battered Nokia, model unknown. It's survived being kicked down the stairs, being run over by a car,and a short bath and It's probably the last of its kind, so it's imminent death will probably be quite tragic.

But yeah, considering I'll have to get a new one soon enough, I'll probably have to buy into the culture, no pun intended.

True enough, true enough. There was some story about a new system in TIME about a mic and a tiny speaker implanted into your face... Now that's something I'm pretty sure I'd want to avoid.

yeah i totally agree with you bout this cellular sub culture thing!even worse is when you are trying to talk to someone and they are constantly checking messages or texting . Fine once , twice it i ok coz it might be important but beyond that it is such a put off!what's the point of meeting in the real world at all! and ia m so addicted to my cell , in the middle of writing an exam my hands want to reach out to see if i've gotten a message :D

i'll have another one said...

>ruchika: guess its a matter of getting used to. Makes you wonder how people went bout life even before telephones!!

and sms is great when it doesnt mutate into a sms conversation then its neither obtrusive nor short nor cheap.

> ir: sooner or later, you will have to come to the dark side. Hee Haa Haa (closest i could come to a darth vader laugh!)

>maya: nope no research. like all my info, this one is also a series of random words put together. problem is, Damn nokia has so many models, it all sounds ok!

>Ksingh: Buddy, you were always two phone guy, You've finally got it now! Wishing you hours of fun calling and sms'ing yourself.

haha....horrible as it sounds...i actually did end up going out without my cell phone once...i happened to leave it in the car and decided it wasnt a big deal...until i realized...i had just left my life behind...my mode of conversation ....my companion outside the bathroom, while i waited for the drunk women tryin to pretty themselves up in there...is it just me..everytime...i feel like have a minute to myself...that i could use contstructively and observe the happenings around me...i leave that aside and choose to punch a number and start a random conversation with a friend..or send an sms to a person you know will reply back in less than a minute...why is it that i(presuming im the only weird one) dont like to think and observe anymore...am i scared that i wont have answers to our questions or am i just scared to just end up alone with my random thoughts
